Vietnam now have 1,231.29 points and sit 99th in the world. Luxembourg are right behind on 1,225.87 points after a 1-0 defeat to Estonia. A gap of 5.42 points can disappear in a single international window.
Why the ranking matters
FIFA points decide the seeding pots for qualifying draws. A higher pot means avoiding some of the strongest teams early. For sponsors and rights holders, the ranking is also the simplest way to describe the team's standing.
Vietnam will need carefully chosen friendlies in the next FIFA windows: opponents strong enough to learn from, in matches the team can control.
